Tribute to Leona Fischer

Tribute to Mrs. Fischer
by Terry Reid

Mrs. Fischer made the Sunnyvale Pecan Harvest Festival possible in 2009 when she graciously allowed the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce to hold the first annual festival on her property. She loved having the people and activity around her as she always had in years gone by. She was an extraordinary woman, and a precious friend. She wanted us to continue the festival, and was a great inspiration to me. On March 22, 2011, the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce will hold its general annual meeting in the evening to accomodate as many people as possible. There will be a special tribute to Mrs. Fischer remembering her as the first and forever Pecan Queen. Please see her obituary below.

Leona “DeRue” Fischer passed away February 26, 2011 at the age of 83. She was born to Harvey and Fannie Bullard on January 1, 1928 in Emory, Texas. Graduated from Emory High School in 1944 and married her high school sweetheart, Waymon Charles Fischer in 1946. DeRue and Waymon owned and operated the Douglas and Michael Daycare Center in Dallas and Fischer’s Fun Farm Summer Day Camp for 25 years. In 1972, the couple opened Fischer’s Antiques in Sunnyvale, a landmark in the Hwy 80 antiques area for 30 years. DeRue was preceded in death by her husband, Waymon Charles Fischer. She Is survived by brother, Carlton Bullard of Garland, sons Ronnie, Tony and Sam, 3 granddaughters and 2 great-grandsons.
